Reason for the day's celebration
It is believed that the great human and Buddhist pioneer the great Buddha was born on this day at Lumbini. It is also mentioned as the day when he got enlightened under the Bodhi tree and also the day when Buddha died.
In the year 1999, UN General Assembly declared this day as Vesak day to show their respect to the contribution of Buddhism for a peaceful society, as it is an ancient religion that was followed by most of the countries all over the world. This day is celebrated at UN headquarters and other offices every year.
